Russia – The Frozen Lakes Drive 2017

A drive in the extreme cold temperatures in the heart of the Russian winters is not for the faint hearted! Are you tough enough to brave the cold temperatures as low as -20 degrees, fierce winds, icy roads and to top it all, drive on glass like surfaces of the frozen lakes?

On this unique road trip, not only will you immerse yourself in the unique Russian culture visiting ancient cities, historic towns and age old cathedrals, you will also get to take the road less travelled as you go on exploring those parts of the country which are hard to find on a tourist map! Explore the historic cities of Moscow and St Petersburg, drive through age old towns like Valday and Myshkin, and be a part of a rare group of travelers as you go on exploring the biggest country in the world sitting behind the wheels of your iconic UAZ Patriot 4×4 vehicle!

Day 1 - Moscow City

Day 01

21st Jan’17 – Moscow

Home to the famous Red Square, you will arrive in the beautiful city of Moscow. The city is said to date back eight-and-a half-centuries and has beautiful architecture created over several centuries.You will be directly transferred from the Airport to the Hotel where you can relax before you start discovering Moscow. From Ice staking rinks to Ice sculptures and Snow Parades, there is a lot to see.

The city is also home to the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre, for those who prefer more classical entertainment. At the hotel, meet your fellow travelers and remember…you will be hugging these same people when the trip ends, who appear as strangers to you on this day!

Day 2 - Ice Rink next to St Basil's Cathedral

Day 02

22nd Jan’17 – Moscow – Sergiev Posad (80 km / 1 hour 30 minutes)

Today, you will be introduced to your 4×4 vehicles as we start exploring the extreme winters of Russia by road! We will test our snow driving abilities under the watchful eye of a professional instructor who will give us a briefing on how to drive on ice. This part is really fun as you will learn something new, exciting and unique to Russia. After getting comfortable with the vehicle, we will continue driving on snow covered roads and reach Sergiev Posad, also known as the “Russian Vatican”.

The city is located among picturesque forests on the shore of the large and circular Lake Plescheevo. It has a massive collection of churches and you will have enough time to visit some of these. In the churches, you’ll also be able to hear the wonderful choir singing, as it never stops from early morning to late evening. Later, a hearty meal will be waiting for us at the hotel. Overnight in Sergiev Posad.

Day 3 - The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius

Day 03

23rd Jan’17 – Sergiev Posad – Rybinsk (250 km / 2 hours 44 minutes)

After Breakfast, we will go for an excursion to Lavra which is the largest monastery of the Russian Orthodox church. It used to be a Russian fortress and is surrounded by massive walls and towers. Its territory is filled with objects (over 40 buildings) of art built in XV-XIX centuries by the leading Russian masters.

After visiting Lavra, we will drive towards Uglich which is also a part of the Golden Ring. It is the perfect showcase for those wishing to experience pure Russian beauty. What was once a fortress in the Kingdom of Muscovy is now a quiet retreat against the hectic city life.

On our way to Uglich, we will be driving on a special snow training field and get one more opportunity to experience the thrill of driving on snow covered fields which on occasions may feel like driving on glass because you may actually see the reflection of your vehicle on the ground below you! We will also be visiting Kremlin, which is on the highland of the Volga River. In ancient times, surrounded by water, the fortress was inaccessible.

Post lunch, we will drive on ice-covered rivers to reach the town of Myshkin (Mouse’s city). Interestingly, many places and museums in Myshkin have a mouse theme. After exploring this fascinating city, we will continue driving towards Rybinsk. Spend the rest of the evening relaxing in your luxury hotel in Rybinsk.

ong drive towards Valday, Russian bath - Banya - Day 4

Day 04

24th Jan’17 – Rybinsk – Valday (563 km / 7 hours 30 minutes)

We will have an early start today as we have a long way to go. After hot cups of tea/coffee and a scrumptious Russian breakfast, we will start our long drive towards Valday. This is going to be an interesting drive as Valday is known for its bells, lakes, forests and rivers. En route, we will stop at Borovichi which is a beautiful town located next to the Mtsa river for Lunch. On way to Borovichi, we will also stop for another quick breakfast in Cherepovets.

On the way we will see many small Russian villages and churches. Of course, we will stop in many of them to meet the local people. In the afternoon, we will continue our drive towards Valday. The frozen lakes experience is going to get more thrilling and exciting as we will brave ourselves to take steam bath in a genuine Russian bathhouse and dive into a natural ice-hole cut out in the middle of a frozen lake! After the long driving day and adventurous dips, we will call for a sumptuous dinner at the hotel and stay the night in Valday.Driving

Valday Iversky Monastery - Road trip Russia

Day 05

25th Jan’17 – Valday – Veliky Novgorod (140 km/ 1hour 42 minutes)

In the morning after a hearty breakfast, we will have some time to explore the city further and to visit strikingly beautiful places, like the ensemble of Valday Iversky Monastery, the Presentation Church and the Valdaysky District Museum. In the afternoon, we will start our journey towards Veliky Novgorod. During the trip, we will drive by the Kresttsy Town, famous for its linen lace called “Embroidery of Kresttsy”. As we reach Veliky Novgorod, we will stop here for the night and have an elaborate Russian dinner.

drive to St. Sophia Cathedral - Road trip Russia

Day 06

26th Jan’17 – Veliky Novgorod – St Petersburg (240 km / 3 hours 30 minutes)

Today, we will do some sightseeing in Veliky Novgorod. We will visit St. Sophia Cathedral, built between 1045 and 1050 under the patronage of Vladimir Yaroslavich, Novgorod Kremlin, traditionally known as the Detinets, also contains the oldest palace in Russia. Veliky Novgorod will definitely leave an unforgettable impression on your mind because of its inimitable and majestic landscape.

Time to switch your tourist hats with your travellers hats as we sit behind the wheels and start driving towards St. Petersburg. We will not follow the main road between Moscow and St. Petersburg, but will drive on a country picturesque road, which will go through a few small towns, such as Luga & Gatchina. On the way, we will be driving on more icy roads. But there is nothing to worry about, by now, you would have become a bit of an expert in driving on frozen lakes and icy roads!

We will arrive at St Petersburg in the evening and will stay the night in one of the best hotels of the city. Don’t forget to stroll along the famous Nevsky Prospect in the evening before getting together for dinner in the beautiful city of St Petersburg.

Church of the Split Blood - Self Drive Russia

Day 07

27th Jan’17 – St Petersburg

This day you will be able to admire the city on your own, whether you’re in the Church of the Spilt Blood, visiting museums, or walking down the streets, in any case you’ll admire gorgeous decorated bridges, monuments and the buildings that once housed Russia’s nobility. Museums, Palaces, Mansions and Villas, Religious Sights, Monuments, Rivers, and Canals, everything is fascinating in St. Petersburg. No wonder, St Petersburg is called one of the most beautiful cities of the world.

For example, The Hermitage Museum is the general attraction in Saint Petersburg. A wonderful palace-museum showing more than 3,000,000 pieces of art. The Hermitage is one of the world’s greatest museums, with priceless works by Rembrandt, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rubens and more.

In the evening, we will get together for a Farewell Dinner! Remember how you shook hands and formally introduced yourself to your fellow participants on day 1? We promise you, tonight you will be hugging goodbyes with a promise to keep in touch!

Day 08

28th Jan’17 – St Petersburg

The expedition concludes this morning and we fly back home. However, in case you wish to extend your programme and stay back in St Petersburg for a few more days, we will be happy to assist you in extending your holiday!
