After breakfast, head towards Vologda, a city located in northwest Russia. Vologda is a city in northwest Russia. En route, enjoy some excellent winter driving experience. Later in the afternoon, you will visit the Vologda Open Air Museum of Architecture and Ethnography. Start early today as there is a long way to go on a combination of highways, forests and off-roading tracks. After hot cups of tea and coffee and a scrumptious Russian breakfast, start the long drive towards Tikhvin, a place which became the first town in the USSR to be liberated from fascists, stands on the territory of the Volkhov lowland on the Tikhvinka river. Located in the eastern part of the Leningrad region, Tikhvin is a large industrial city famous for its interesting fragments of the Tikhvin water system as well as the famous Tikhvin Assumption Monastery. Admire the vast expanses of the Russian land, old wooden houses and the villagers who have chosen a simple measured life, as you drive through the quaint towns.
Post a hearty breakfast, start your drive towards Verkhniye Mandrogi which is more of a living museum than a live-in village. It features a collection of old wooden houses and is geared towards showing visitors what a traditional Russian village resembled in the past. After lunch, you will get to ride in a sleigh drawn by horses. Take a walk through the village where you will see demonstrations of wood carving, lacework, and pottery. From here, continue the journey towards Petrozavodsk, the capital of the Republic of Karelia. Set on a bay on vast Lake Onega, it is the launching point to two of the region’s biggest attractions: Kizhi Island and Valaam Monastery. Its neoclassical facades, a large student population and connections with Finland all make for a distinctly European atmosphere.
If you are a dog lover, then you are in for a treat! Today, get a chance to familiarise yourself with beautiful Siberian Husky breed and a tour of their kennel. Their wolf-like features are hard to miss and their piercing blue eyes will have you transfixed. Enjoy activities like Husky walks or Husky sledding. You will be able to communicate with these intelligent and affectionate dogs and feed treats to them. You will also get a short theory course on sledge riding and briefing on safety. Post which you can enjoy the ride as a passenger with an experienced instructor. You can even take a trip on a snowmobile. Enjoy the speed and sparkling snow as you experience the beauty of Karelia flashing by.
Today is the longest day of the journey as we head towards the world famous city of St Petersburg. It is going to be a long drive on the road but with the experience of last one week under your belt, this long drive is going to pleasant and comfortable. By the end of the day, you will give yourself a pat on your back on completing 450 kilometres drive in such extreme conditions. As part of the long and exciting drive today, you will also be driving through Staraya Ladoga, which claims to be the first capital of Russia and also see the Staraya Ladoga Fortress. Visiting this soulful old place and wandering around its crumbling ramparts is a unique experience and you might feel you’re in a Tarkovsky film.
Spend your rest day exploring the beautiful city of St. Petersburg, yet another destination to check off from your list of personalized itineraries in Russia.
