Africa – The Cradle of Life

Africa – The Cradle of Life

Locations:

Africa

“I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up that I was not happy.” Thus stated acclaimed American author Ernest Hemingway, for such is the beauty and ethereality of Africa. The cradle of life, this is where it all began; this is where all our collective stories first came into existence.

The luminous white beaches of Mombasa, the towering sand dunes of Namibia, the incredible wildlife experience of Masai Mara, or the vast ecosystem of the Okavango Delta, popularly known as ‘the last Eden on Earth’ — the list is endless! But wherever you go and whatever you see, be prepared to leave a part of you behind and to fall in love with something much bigger than our urban coteries.

Listed below, we bring you three of the many awe-inspiring routes within the Mother Continent, which should be on every avid road tripper’s bucket list.

Nairobi to Arusha

Hosting two of the most stunning wildlife reserves in the world en route, the trip from Kenya’s capital Nairobi to the city of Arusha in Tanzania is amazing to say the least. After having had your fill of Masai Mara in Kenya, which astonishes with its unparalleled panoramas and wildlife spectacles, head on to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The world-renowned nature conserve is sure to deliver on your expectations with its mesmerizing wildebeest migration, and expansive golden plains.

Next up on this exciting route is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ngorongoro Crater. Witness first hand nature’s spellbinding artistry in the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, which is home to the highest concentration of big game in Africa.

Swakopmund to Sossusvlei

One of Africa’s most splendid countries, Namibia derives its name from the Namib desert which is also the oldest in the world. Bearing testimony to the influence of its German colonizers from a century ago, is the Namibian coastal town of Swakopmund. Walvis Bay is the first major stopover on the route from here to Sossusvlei, where a delightful horde of flamingos and pelicans await you by the lagoon. Then comes the fascinating Namib-Naukluft National Park and the Tropic of Capricorn en route to the desert town of Solitaire. If other spirited travelers are to be believed, it’s customary to stop and bite into a piece of Apple Pie at this remote location!

The heart of the Namibian desert realm, Sossusvlei greets you with swirling sand dunes in hues of striking orange and scarlet. It is here that the desert meets the Tsauchab River which, when it fills up the parched pan, helps create one of the most spectacular sights in the world.

Some of the world’s largest known sand dunes like the Big Daddy and Dune 45 tower above you, making one realise how minuscule we are when faced with the staggering reality of unspoilt nature.

Garden Route

Beginning from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east of South Africa, the Garden Route is an approximately 200 KM stretch of remarkable seascapes with an extensive range of topography, and flora and fauna for company. The shoreline arrives dotted with pristine beaches and bays, while picturesque lagoons and lakes make for a delightful sight as one moves inland.

Gorgeous rolling hills belonging to the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountain ranges overlook towns such as Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Nature’s Valley and George, amongst others, which offer a range of leisure activities for the visiting tourists. As you prepare to mark this glorious route off your SA checklist, don’t forget to visit an Ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn for a memorable ride atop the world’s largest bird!

We at Adventures Overland are committed to help you achieve your travelling goals with nothing but convenience and luxury at your behest.
