Itinerary

Arrive in Frankfurt and transfer to your hotel. Take some time to settle in and let it sink in — over the next eight days, you won’t just see Europe, you’ll drive through its most underrated mountain routes. In the evening, meet your fellow travellers and the AO team — the people who’ll share Autobahn stretches, alpine passes, coffee stops, and stories with you. We’ll walk you through the route, the cars, and what to expect in the days ahead. The day ends with a relaxed welcome dinner — easy conversations, new connections, and that quiet excitement knowing that tomorrow, the engines start and the real journey begins.

We leave Frankfurt and ease into Germany’s legendary driving culture — including some unrestricted stretches of the Autobahn, where you experience what “no speed limit” truly feels like. As we approach Baden-Baden, the scenery begins to change. The Northern Black Forest wraps around us — denser woods, gentle elevation gains, and roads that shift from fast to beautifully flowing. The drive becomes more intimate here, with long bends cutting through thick forest and that unmistakable European countryside charm. In the afternoon, we slow things down with a walking tour of Baden-Baden — exploring its refined streets, the historic Caracalla Therme, the grand Casino Baden-Baden, and its elegant Belle Époque character. The evening is relaxed, with an overnight stay in Baden-Baden.

We leave Baden-Baden and drive straight into one of Germany’s most scenic stretches — the legendary Schwarzwaldhochstraße (B500). The Black Forest High Road is truly iconic — smooth sweeping curves, steady elevation gains, and panoramic viewpoints that open up over endless layers of forest. It’s the kind of drive where you settle into a flow and simply enjoy every turn. Deeper into the Black Forest, we stop at the world’s largest cuckoo clock at Eble Uhren-Park — a fun, slightly nostalgic roadside moment. We then roll into Triberg im Schwarzwald, often called the Cuckoo Clock Capital of the world, for a relaxed coffee stop and a slice of classic Black Forest cake. By early afternoon, we descend toward Konstanz, set along Lake Constance near the Swiss border. After a forest-heavy driving day, the open lakeside setting feels refreshing and calm. The evening is at leisure, with an overnight stay in Konstanz.

We leave Konstanz early for what many consider the most powerful driving day of the journey. In a single stretch, we cross Germany, Switzerland & Italy, watching the landscape evolve as we move through Landquart and deeper into the Swiss Alps. The mountains grow taller, the valleys narrower, and every kilometre feels more dramatic than the last. As the climb begins toward Stelvio Pass, the road demands more focus. The north-side ascent, with its 48 hairpin bends, is everything a driver hopes for. At 2,757 metres, when you step out at the summit, the view feels earned. The descent into Italy eases the intensity, and by the time we arrive in Bolzano, the mood shifts. Warmer tones, relaxed piazzas, and a softer pace welcome us after a long day. Tonight, we rest in Bolzano; satisfied, slightly tired, and already replaying the hairpins in our heads.

Today, we set off on a short but incredibly scenic drive toward Ortisei. As we climb into Val Gardena, pine forests and postcard-perfect villages with wooden chalets and flower-lined balconies accompany us, all framed by the dramatic Dolomites. From Ortisei’s town centre, we board the cable car up to Seceda, rising to nearly 2,500 metres. As you ascend, the valley slowly drops away and the grandeur of the mountains begins to reveal itself. At the top, you’re standing on one of the most iconic ridgelines in the Dolomites, surrounded by sweeping 360° views over Val Gardena and jagged peaks stretching endlessly into the distance. After taking it all in, we descend back to Bolzano for a relaxed evening and overnight stay.

Today we head toward Austria. The drive through the Bressanone region brings dramatic Dolomite backdrops and traditional Tyrolean villages along the way, with wooden homes and church towers dotting wide alpine meadows. After crossing into Austria, we enter Hohe Tauern National Park, the gateway to the legendary Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Climbing to 2,504 metres at Hochtor Pass, the road opens up into sweeping curves and beautifully engineered switchbacks. We pause at Franz-Josefs-Höhe for breathtaking glacier views, and then continue toward Edelweissspitze, which offers unforgettable 360° panoramas. The drive carries on as rugged peaks slowly give way to green valleys and open meadows, and soon Lake Zell appears beside us. By evening, we arrive in Zell am See and retire to our accommodation for the night.

We leave Zell am See and climb toward Gerlos Pass, rising to about 1,500 metres. The road here feels effortless, with long sweeping bends, vast alpine views, and a smooth rhythm that allows you to simply enjoy the drive. The descent carries us into the wide green expanse of the Zillertal Valley, framed by gentle Tyrolean slopes and picture-perfect villages. The mountains soften, the roads widen, and the drive becomes relaxed as we gradually make our way back toward Germany. As we approach Munich, there’s one last chance to experience select derestricted stretches of the Autobahn. In the evening, we gather for a farewell dinner, sharing favourite moments and the simple satisfaction of having driven across four countries together.

Your European drive concludes today in Munich. Airport transfers will be arranged as per your departure schedule. On the way, there’s time to look back at the journey — the unrestricted Autobahns, the 48 hairpins of Stelvio Pass, the vast alpine drama of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, and the ever-changing landscapes across four countries. The drive may end here, but the shared moments, the roads conquered together, and the friendships built over these eight days are what you truly take home.

Throughout the journey, accommodation is arranged in premium properties, including the Frankfurt Marriott Hotel, Steigenberger Icon Europäischer Hof Baden-Baden, Hotel 47° Konstanz, Parkhotel Laurin Bolzano, Grand Hotel Zell am See, and Le Méridien Munich.
This is a structured convoy experience with full ground support, curated lunch stops, guided city walks and coordinated cross-border logistics. Freedom, with precision behind it.
Best Time to Experience the Grand Alps Drive
The ideal window for this Europe road trip package is between late May and September, when Europe’s high alpine passes are reliably open, and weather conditions allow for safe, scenic mountain driving.
During these months:
- Stelvio Pass and Grossglockner High Alpine Road are fully operational.
- Roads remain dry, and visibility across alpine ridgelines is at its best.
- The Dolomites display dramatic contrasts between lingering snow caps and green valleys.
- Lakeside towns like Konstanz and Zell am See are lively yet not overwhelmingly crowded on weekdays.
Late May and early June offer cooler temperatures and relatively quieter passes, and September gives softer light and crisp mountain air, all perfect for a true self-drive Austria and Alpine adventure. July and August offer long daylight hours, vibrant European-summer energy, and clearer summit views. September introduces softer light, fewer tourists and crisp mountain air.
Because this journey climbs above 2,500 metres, seasonal timing is crucial. Snow closures outside this window can restrict access to key passes. For those seeking the full alpine experience, summer remains the prime season.
Best Places & Driving Routes Covered on the Grand Alps Drive
Some roads are built for transport. Others are built for transformation. The Grand Alps Drive threads through routes where engineering brilliance meets cinematic landscapes, creating a journey that feels deliberately composed. Here are some iconic highlights that define the opening stretch of this epic drive.
The German Autobahn Experience
Select unrestricted sections allow you to experience what “no speed limit” truly feels like. Well-engineered lanes, disciplined traffic culture and open stretches combine to create one of the most unique driving environments in the world.
Black Forest High Road (B500)
The Schwarzwaldhochstraße is among Germany’s most scenic drives. Sweeping bends cut through dense woodland, offering panoramic viewpoints of evergreen hills. The route offers a balance between rhythm and relaxation, ideal for settling into the convoy flow.
A nostalgic stop at the world’s largest cuckoo clock at Eble Uhren-Park and a coffee break in Triberg add cultural texture to the forest drive.
Stelvio Pass – Italy
Climbing to 2,757 metres, Stelvio is one of Europe’s most iconic alpine ascents. The 48 hairpins on the north side are both technical and exhilarating, making this a highlight of any Europe road trip package.
Reaching the summit is both technical and emotional. The descent into Italy softens the terrain, transitioning into the warmer tones of Bolzano and South Tyrol.
Dolomites & Seceda
From Bolzano, a scenic drive leads into Val Gardena. The cable car from Ortisei ascends to nearly 2,500 metres, offering views of one of the most iconic ridgelines in the Dolomites. Sweeping 360° views stretch across jagged limestone peaks and alpine meadows.
It is a pause in the driving narrative, allowing the mountains to be absorbed at stillness before engines restart.
Grossglockner High Alpine Road – Austria
Rising to 2,504 metres inside Hohe Tauern National Park, this road is a masterclass in alpine engineering. Sweeping curves, glacier viewpoints at Franz-Josefs-Höhe, and the optional cobbled ascent to Edelweissspitze offer varied textures within a single climb.
The descent toward Zell am See introduces calmer landscapes, green valleys and lakeside reflections.
Famous Things to Do on the Grand Alps Drive
There are road trips… and then there are road epics.
