Your journey begins in the heart of Russia — the vibrant and historic city of Moscow. After landing, you'll meet your fellow travellers and be transferred straight to your hotel. Settle in, refresh, and get ready for your first taste of this incredible city.
To get your bearings, we recommend a relaxed 2-hour orientation walk through Moscow’s iconic center. You’ll stroll through the legendary Red Square, admire the colorful domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral (from the outside), and pass by Lenin’s Tomb, GUM Mall, the Kremlin walls, Kazan Cathedral, and the State History Museum. We’ll also give you a short intro to Moscow’s impressive metro — a world-famous attraction in itself.
As the day winds down, get ready to meet the full group over a warm and lively welcome dinner. It’s the perfect chance to share your excitement, connect with fellow travellers, and kick off this epic road trip across Russia in style.
Our morning starts with an introduction to our SUVs. We conduct a short
briefing, and then our journey begins! We leave the city and adjust to driving
in the convoy and interacting with each other on the radio.
We leave behind Moscow’s cityscape and enter the vast white countryside. The snow-covered roads offer a true taste of winter driving in Russia, giving you the chance to build confidence behind the wheel.
Before reaching our main destination, we take a bold detour to a real Russian military camp — an experience you won’t forget. Climb aboard authentic tanks, try your hand at shooting a Kalashnikov rifle, and feel the adrenaline of Russian military action in a controlled environment. We’ll enjoy a picnic-style lunch on site before getting back on the road.
We continue our drive through the snowy landscapes of the Golden Ring region, a loop of historic towns northeast of Moscow, known for their domed churches and rich cultural heritage.
We arrive in Sergiev Posad, a charming town home to one of the most important spiritual sites in Russia: the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. Founded in the 14th century by Saint Sergius of Radonezh, the monastery is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key pilgrimage destination for Russian Orthodox Christians.
In the evening, we will check into our accommodation and retire for the night.
Today, the road takes us deeper into the Russian countryside as we drive towards Koprino, a peaceful retreat on the frozen shores of the Rybinskoye Reservoir.
Along the way, we pass through charming medieval towns of the famous Golden Ring like Uglich and Myshkin—historic gems known for their quiet streets, colourful onion-domed churches, and slow pace of life.
This is a beautiful drive through scenic countryside, where every turn offers glimpses into Russia’s rich heritage.
By evening, we arrive at a picturesque park hotel nestled in a snow-covered forest, right by the reservoir. Surrounded by nature and silence, it’s the perfect place to unwind after a fulfilling day on the road.
Today is all about embracing the unexpected, as we’ve planned a day full of surprises, fun, and unforgettable winter experiences.
You can choose to relax at the hotel’s incredible wellness centre or step outside into a true Russian winter wonderland.
On the frozen shores of the reservoir, we’ve set up a cozy tent with hot beverages and cookies to keep you warm between adventures. Hop onto a hovercraft and glide across the ice on the frozen Volga river and try your hand at ice fishing.
You can also go cross-country skiing through snow-covered trails or take a thrilling ride on a snowmobile across the open terrain.
And when the sun begins to set, gather with your fellow travellers for shots of Russian vodka at a makeshift ice bar — the perfect way to end a day packed with adventure, laughter, and once-in-a-lifetime memories.
After breakfast, we hit the road towards Vologda, a historic city in northwest Russia, with plenty of winter driving thrills along the way.
The route offers scenic views of snow-covered landscapes and quiet villages, making for an enjoyable and immersive drive.
We might stop for coffee at a curious little village known as the legendary home of Baba Yaga, the fearsome witch from ancient Russian folklore. In the evening, we explore the Vologda Open Air Museum of Architecture and Ethnography, where you’ll step into a beautifully recreated 19th and early 20th-century northern Russian village.
It’s a fascinating chance to experience traditional Russian life, customs, and culture, brought to life by passionate local storytellers. After a day filled with folklore and history, we settle in for a restful night in Vologda.
Early in the morning, after a hearty Russian breakfast and steaming cups of tea or coffee, we begin our journey further north with a long but scenic drive towards the historic town of Tikhvin.
Located on the Tikhvinka River in the Volkhov lowlands, this drive offers a beautiful glimpse into rural Russia, vast open landscapes, frozen fields, old wooden houses, and villagers going about their quiet, simple lives.
The road winds through quaint towns that feel like they’ve stood still in time, adding charm to the day’s drive. Tikhvin itself is a small yet culturally significant town, known across Russia for housing one of the most revered Orthodox Christian icons.
By evening, we check into a cozy guest house with warm, comfortable cottages, perfect for unwinding after a long and memorable day on the road.
After breakfast, we bid farewell to our lovely stay and drive towards the charming village of Upper Mandrogi, a picturesque place that feels like stepping into a Russian fairytale.
Here, you’ll discover an abundance of traditional Russian crafts—matryoshka dolls, handmade lace, pottery, linen, felt work, and more. Don’t miss the chance to taste delicious Russian pasties (pirozhki), a local favourite.
After lunch, enjoy a magical sleigh ride pulled by three horses, followed by a relaxed stroll through the village, perfect for picking up handcrafted souvenirs made by skilled local artisans. As the day winds down, we continue our journey and reach Petrozavodsk by evening, the capital of the Karelia region. Despite its industrial-sounding name, Petrozavodsk surprises with neoclassical architecture, a youthful vibe, Finnish influences, and a peaceful lakeside promenade that invites you for a gentle evening walk.
We will end the day with a delectable dinner followed by an overnight stay.
Today is reserved for leisure in Petrozavodsk.
However, travelers have the option to set off on a thrilling hovercraft ride across the frozen expanse of Lake Onega, the second largest lake in Europe, to reach the stunning Kizhi Island.
The 1.5-hour journey brings us to one of Russia’s most treasured open-air museums, home to some of the finest examples of wooden architecture in the country. The star attraction is the magnificent Church of the Transfiguration with its 22 silver domes, a masterpiece built entirely without nails.
As you explore, you'll also find centuries-old loghouses, intricate household artifacts, and rare religious iconography like the “Savior All Merciful” and “Judgement Day,” dating back to the 1500s.
These structures, gathered from Karelian, Veps, and Russian villages—some believed to be from the 1300s—offer a fascinating glimpse into Russia’s wooden heritage. After soaking in this incredible slice of history and culture, we return to Petrozavodsk and wrap up the day with dinner at one of the city’s warm and inviting restaurants.
This morning, we leave Petrozavodsk and drive west toward the majestic Lake Ladoga, the largest lake located entirely in Europe. Tucked away along a quiet riverbank surrounded by thick Karelian forest, we visit a magical Siberian Husky kennel. Here, you’ll meet the friendly, high-energy Huskies and experience the thrill of a fast-paced sled ride through the snow.
Feel the rush as they pull you across the frozen landscape with incredible speed and grace with majestic huskies leading you. We gather around a crackling fireplace inside a traditional Northern chum (tent) for a hearty local lunch, made even more special with live folk music performed on ethnic instruments.
After this action-packed day, we continue our drive to Sortavala and unwind for the night in a cozy lakeside hotel with dinner and overnight stay.
Today, we set out on the final leg of our epic road trip; driving from Sortavala to the grand city of St. Petersburg. As we leave behind the serene lakes and forests of Karelia, the landscape gradually shifts. This scenic drive offers one last chance to enjoy the quiet thrill of winter driving; snow-dusted roads, pine covered highways, and picture-perfect countryside views that stretch for miles.
The convoy moves in sync, our radios buzzing with chatter and stories from the road each mile bringing us closer to the cultural capital of Russia.
By late afternoon, we’ll arrive in St. Petersburg, where the grandeur of palaces and cathedrals welcomes us. In the evening, we’ll gather for a memorable farewell dinner to celebrate our last day on this unforgettable journey.
Today, our unforgettable adventure through the Russian winter comes to a close. After days of exploring snow-covered towns, ancient monasteries, and breathtaking natural wonders, we part ways with memories to last a lifetime. With warm hugs and heartfelt goodbyes at the airport, we say farewell.
