Namibia Road Trip

Trip Overview

To experience the magic of Namibia is to discover an entirely different world, a strange and beautiful place unlike anything or anywhere you’ve ever imagined. Namibia is a land of geographical extremes encompassing vast areas of inhospitable deserts, sand dunes, towering mountain ranges, and unspoilt wilderness areas. During this 8-day self-drive Namibia expedition, we will head out into the sand dunes at Sossusvlei, which means “the gathering place of water”, where we will also get to trek on Big Daddy, one of the highest sand dunes on earth. Don’t forget to spot the enormous sociable weaver nest here that can house up to 400-500 birds. We will explore Dead Vlei, where orange dunes contrast against blackened camelthorn trees and clear blue skies. It is one of the most dramatic sights that you will see in your life.
We will take the remote, dusty, gravel roads and head towards Swakopmund, the country’s biggest coastal town, where we will experience sand dunes on one side and the ocean on the other! But how can an African expedition ever be complete without a game drive? We will head towards Etosha National Park, Namibia’s premier safari destination, where you will experience a full-day wildlife safari in a custom-fitted vehicle. Our expert ranger will offer amazing insights into the area’s animals, birds, plants and history and make us witness the best wildlife opportunities in southern Africa.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival at Windhoek

Welcome to Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia. Surrounded by the stubble-covered Auas Mountains and the endless Khomas Hochland, Windhoek lies in a long valley fed by ancient hot springs in the central highlands of Namibia. In Windhoek there are many interesting historical buildings, museums, galleries and craft shops. The city has several good restaurants and modern shops and services making it an excellent base camp from which to launch your Namibian adventure. The town itself is small as capitals go with around 2,30,000 inhabitants making up a little over 10% of the national population. Our representative will escort you to the hotel and there you will meet the amazing AO family of enthusiastic travellers with whom you will explore Namibia over the next 8 days, one km at a time!

Day 2

Windhoek - Sossusvlei (350 Km)

Namibia is waiting to welcome you with open arms so wake up, grab a bite, pack your bags, get acquainted with your 4x4 vehicle and hit the road in our signature convoy fashion as your expedition leader announces “Convoy Rolling” over the walkie talkies. We will start driving south from Windhoek towards Sossusvlei and you will notice a dramatic change in landscape just a few km after leaving Windhoek behind. The route will go via the beautiful Spreetshoogte Pass where the view from the top of the escarpment is stunning. We will also make some more photo stops along the way to admire the remote, rugged and rustic beauty of the Namibian countryside. Arrive in Sossusvlei by evening and enjoy a luxury dinner over interesting conversations about your first driving day in Namibia.

Day 3

Sossusvlei

Wake up early and start your guided excursion to Sossusvlei. Renowned for its red dunes, the highest in the world rising 300m into the air, and for the stark images of 900-year-old trees standing defiant flat, white dried salt pan known as Deadvlei, Sossusvlei is one of the most spectacular sights in Namibia. In addition to the dunes, we will also explore the Sesriem Canyon. Sossusvlei brings out the creative photographer in everyone - provided you beat the mid-day haze. Surreal shapes, colours, textures and landscapes are accentuated by the ancient trees and desert-adapted wildlife like gemsbok, springbok and ostrich.

Day 4

Sossusvlei – Swakopmund (350 Km)

Today is going to test your driving skills as you negotiate long, open and empty stretches of country roads amidst the rugged yet stunning Namibian landscapes. Your expedition leader will continue giving driving tips over the radios to help you negotiate the gravel roads which are sure to leave dust clouds behind! We will make a photo stop as we cross the Tropic of Capricorn today and if time permits, will take a detour via Ganab to the Welwitschia plains and the gorgeous Moon landscape. Lunch will be picnic style somewhere in the middle of nowhere and by evening, we will reach Swakopmund where we will check into our hotel after having spent an exciting day on the road.

Day 5

Swakopmund and Walvis Bay

Surrounded by the ancient Namib desert and the inhospitable - but bounteous - Atlantic Ocean, the towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay are alive with activity and adventure. We are going to spend our afternoon experiencing an adrenalin pumping 4x4 drive in the sand dunes of the Sandwich Harbour (any experience of Dune Bashing anywhere else in the world is about to fade out from your memory)! A part of the Namib Naukluft Park, Sandwich Harbour is a place many have heard of but very few have ever visited. It is one of Namibia’s most unique and dramatic sites where some of the world’s highest dunes descend into the cold Atlantic Ocean to form a picturesque lagoon.

Day 6

Swakopmund - Etosha South (500 Km)

Get ready for a long day on the road as we head north towards the Etosha National Park. By now you would have become comfortable driving on the gravel roads and will also feel at home driving through uninhabited countryside for hours at a stretch. We will make the most of our time on the road by taking regular photo stops, tea breaks and a lunch break in the town called Otjiwarongo, home to the Cheetah Conservation Fund, an international organization dedicated to ensuring the long-term survival of the Cheetah. After lunch, we will continue towards Etosha and arrive in our luxury lodge just in time to sip a sundowner before enjoying a lunch under an African starlit sky

Day 7

Etosha South

Wake up early and head out on a full day safari tour in a custom-fitted vehicle with an expert ranger in the Etosha National Park, Namibia’s premier safari destination. Etosha is one of the few places, maybe the only place, where some of the best game viewing would be during the heat of the day when plains game in their hundreds congregate at the waterholes to drink. It is not uncommon to see up to 7 different species of game at any waterhole. Wildlife you are likely to see, at close quarters if you spend some time at the waterholes, includes a growing number of rhino - both black and white - and the endemic black-faced impala and Damara dik-dik. The Namibian trademarks, gemsbok and springbok, are common and there are good numbers of southern Africa's big game including elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, caracal, brown and spotted hyena, eland, roan, kudu, wildebeest, red hartebeest, Hartman's mountain (only in the west) and Burchell's plains zebra, and black- backed jackal.

Day 8

Etosha South - Windhoek (400 Km)

The last day of our Namibia Road Trip is already here and we will start heading back towards Windhoek this morning but there is a little twist! We will go back into the Etosha National Park one more time except that this time, we will be self-driving inside the park in our own vehicles. Driving yourself in the park is going to be a rare experience and fun experience and one that you will fondly remember and cherish forever. After exploring Etosha for a few hours, we will hit the tarmac and continue towards Windhoek. En-route, we will stop for lunch at Outjo’s famous bakery. We will arrive in Windhoek by evening and get together in a plush restaurant to celebrate the success of our drive with our co-travellers.

Day 9

Windhoek Departure

After 8 days of driving through the hidden gems and famous sights of Namibia, it is time to bid goodbye not only to this stunning part of the world but also to the new friends that you have made along the way on this tour. We will make arrangements to take you to the airport for your flight back home and look forward to exploring another part of our beautiful world once again
